ANNOUNCEMENT

Blount County Schools will require masks to be worn inside buildings beginning Tuesday, August 24, 2021 through September 17, 2021.

Effective August 24, 2021, all Blount County Schools will require masks/face coverings be worn inside school buildings. Masks will not be required for outside activities such as PE, athletics, band, or during recess. Masks will continue to be required on buses. Efforts will also be made to social distance students in the classroom 3 feet apart. If students properly wear masks inside buildings and on buses, close contacts will not have to be quarantined. Masks will be required for indoor athletic events by all spectators and athletes when not actively participating in the contest. Masks will not be required for outdoor athletic events, but social distancing of spectators will be encouraged. This mandatory mask policy will remain in effect through end of the day on Friday, September 17, 2021. Blount County Schools will continue to monitor our school data in hopes that conditions improve and the mask requirement can become optional again in the near future.

This decision to require masks is based on recommendations from ADPH and the guidance from medical professionals at Children’s Hospital and UAB. We have seen a significant increase in the number of positive Covid-19 cases in the state and in our school district. This has caused a number of students to have to be quarantined to provide them recovery time and to prevent the spread to other students and faculty. Six of our schools have already had to transition to remote learning going into the third week of school. It is extremely important that everyone follow this mask policy to slow down and mitigate the spread that we are currently experiencing in our schools. This is our best opportunity to control transmission and keep our students in school learning and enjoying school activities.
